The 2018 Quiz Writers’ Choice Award winners revealed!

By Krista Culbertson, Assistant Editor

2018’s What Kids Are Reading event was a smashing success. We celebrated 10 years of our What Kids Are Reading report, which looks at the reading habits of school children. Also at the event, the two winners of the Quiz Writers’ Choice Award were announced.

We had two astounding and very different winners this year. One brought us smiles and joy, while the other was a heart-breaking read about the terrors of war.

Primary School Winner: The Doughnut of Doom by Elys Dolan

Elys Dolan’s The Doughnut of Doom is a colourful and exciting picture book about a science experiment gone wrong. Nancy McNutty is a reporter who wants to write a story on Lemon Labs’ experiments, but her boss wants her writing something “more her level”. Nancy is determined to follow the trail of icing and sprinkles. She then becomes a part of the story herself as she helps to save the day!

The quiz writer said, “The Doughnut of Doom is everything a great children’s book should be. It has joy, laughter, and a little bit of danger! Elys fills all of her pages with puns and little surprises that make this book excellent for reading, rereading, and rereading again.”

Secondary School Winner: The Orange Grove by Larry Tremblay

The Orange Grove is a novel from Canadian author Larry Tremblay, and was translated from its original French by Sheila Fischman. The story follows twin brothers Aziz and Ahemed as they become pawns in their country’s civil war. Their father is forced to choose one of them to strap on a belt of explosives and make the ultimate sacrifice.

Managing Editor Cecelia Powell says that The Orange Grove is a book that should be in every Secondary School. It’s a challenging novel for older readers, and will help them examine the difficulties of living in a war-torn country. Our Senior Editor Sarah, who quizzed the book, said that Tremblay’s novel is “powerful, moving and thought-provoking”.

A big congratulations to both of our winners, and all of this year’s nominees. We look forward to quizzing some more amazing books in the coming year. You can read 2018’s What Kids are Reading Report in full here.
