Promotional poster for The Great GatsbyDue to the recent release of Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, we have reviewed our quiz of the book. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tells the tragic love story of Jay Gatsby, a dashing, enigmatic millionaire who is obsessed with the elusive Daisy Buchanan. The setting is the Roaring Twenties, a period of decadence and exciting new influences. One of the great American novels, it is used widely as a literature text owing to its powerful themes and subtle storytelling.

When books are adapted for cinema, we often review our quizzes to ensure that they cannot be passed by viewing the film alone. We have just completed this process for The Great Gatsby, and the updated quiz is available now under the existing quiz number.

To coincide with the Reading Practice quiz update, we’ve also made available a Vocabulary Practice quiz to accompany the existing Literary Skills quiz for the book. Vocabulary Practice quizzes test a student’s knowledge of the words used in a book, seen in the context of sentences taken from the text itself. These tests help to determine the complexity of the words a student is able to understand. Literacy Skills quizzes help monitor student growth in the comprehension and literacy skills that are most often assessed in public examinations.  These quizzes measure specific skills in the context of a whole book. Literacy Skills quizzes are supplemental and are to be taken only occasionally and in far fewer numbers than Reading Practice quizzes.
