Usually, STAR Reading starts the student’s first test with questions slightly below the student’s year. If the student has taken a STAR Reading test in the past six months, STAR Reading uses the results from the last test to decide the starting difficulty level for the next one.

However, when students have an Estimated Reading Level (RL) set, STAR Reading uses it to decide how difficult the first question should be. You should only enter an Estimated RL for students who receive reading instruction at a higher or lower level than their current year.

To set this preference for a student:

    1. Click on STAR Reading on the Home Page, then click Preferences.

    2. On the Preferences page, select your School and class from the drop-down lists.

    3. In the Student Preferences section of the page, click Edit.

    4. To change a student’s Estimated Reading Level, type it in the field in the row for that student (in the Estimated RL column ). Note: Although Year 1 students can take the STAR Reading test, 1 cannot be set as an Estimated RL.

    5. Click Save
