Bitten by the Vampire - How thrillers and chillers can help a child read more

GP Taylor,

Author

Twilight, Dracula and Shadowmancer have thrilled children and encouraged them to open books and read. GP Taylor - back by popular demand - speaks about his use of myth and legend in encouraging children and young people to pick up books and get stuck in to a good tale.

10.00-10.30

Reading Pictures

Anthony Browne,

Author

Current Children's Laureate Anthony talks about the ways he uses the illustrations in his books to enhance the words, and demonstrates the way artists have done the same thing throughout history in this informative session. Anthony explains how pictures contain clues that tell you what characters are thinking or feeling, and by reading these clues we get a far deeper understanding of the story.
10.30 -10.45 Coffee Break

10.45 -11.30

Playing the Shape Game

Anthony Browne,

Author

In this fun session, Anthony will demonstrate the drawing game that he thought he had invented with his brother when they were small boys. Children are brilliant at this game and although it's great fun, Anthony believes it also has a serious aspect.  Essentially, the game is about creativity itself.  Every time we draw a picture, or write a story, we are playing the Shape Game.  In this session we will play our own Shape Game, which we'll then develop into an activity that involves words and pictures.

10.45 -11.30

School Libraries – the heart of the learning school Jonathan Douglas, National Literacy Trust As Director of the NLT, Jonathan knows all about the importance of reading - and the vital role of the School Library. In this session, he will examine how they support literacy standards and learning outcomes across the school. He will explore the ways in which the role of school libraries relates to national education policy, and what their future will look like in a changing educational landscape.

10.45 -11.30

Technology + Literacy Skills = happy learners!

Bev Humphrey,

Librarian

In this information-packed session, you will be taken on a whistle-stop tour of the ways in which you can utilise new media and technologies to enthuse students (and staff colleagues!) about reading and writing. Social media and web 2.0 can be powerful learning facilitators that can help make the job of teaching both easier and more fun - and, as Beverley explains, you don't have to be a geek to use them!

10.45 -11.30

Raising Standards with Accelerated Maths

John Moore,

Renaissance Learning

In total, 82 different studies have proven that when combined with classroom best practices, Accelerated Maths can dramatically improve your maths results. 73 of those studies were independent, 29 experimental or quasi- experimental and 17 have been published in peer reviewed journals. If you want to learn about a program proven time after time to work, then this is the must-see session for you.

10.45 -11.30

The Murderous Maths of Everything

Kjaratan Poskitt,

Author

In this fascinating session, Kjartan will present an astonishing range of facts and features from his big new colour book, such as: a pile of pennies that goes past the sun; the chances of guessing the murderer, weapon and room in Cluedo; a maths problem that made the gods kill off the ancient Greeks with plague; the strange numbers that control snails and sunflowers; how to cut something in half and keep it in one piece; monster stars and the size of space; how to make your birthday last twice as long, and how you can draw a little diagram to make you famous forever. Along the way you will meet Professor Fiendish, Riverboat Lil, The Evil Gollarks and the rest of the Murderous Maths characters - plus you will discover triangle numbers, probability, powers, The Fibonacci series, planets, mind-numbing sums, illusions and what you can prove with ghost potatoes!

Using Engaging Technologies to Develop Independent, Motivated Readers and Learners for Life

Daniel Tennent,

Micro Librarian Systems

In this session the MLS Team will demonstrate the effective use of the latest technologies, including web-based Library Systems, Learning Platforms, Mobile Devices, Silverlight and E-Resources, to engage students in reading so that they can discover the world of opportunity the Library holds. This session is a must for forward-thinking individuals that are keen to exploit cutting-edge technology to enhance the literacy and research skills of their students.

12.00 -12.45 Reading Rocks

Kathy Heaps,

Specialist Schools and Academies Trust

"One in six people in the UK struggle to read and write. Poor basic skills compromise, health, confidence, happiness and employment..." (NLT NOV. 2009) So what can we do to turn young people in both primary and secondary schools on to reading? This session is full of ideas to help engage even the most reluctant readers.
12.00 -12.45 Both Sides of the Fence Chris Goy, Teacher and Author, and Bev Stuttard, Librarian Chris is both a published children’s Author and a serving Assistant Head Teacher in the secondary sector. In this interesting session he shares the journey his school has made with Accelerated Reader. From his relatively unusual position on both sides of the fence, he gives an Author’s perspective on the difficulty of engaging reluctant readers, and offers one particularly innovative solution.

12.00 -12.45

The Ghost Story in Literacy and How it Can be Used Today

GP Taylor,

Author

New York Times best-selling Author and former exorcist, GP Taylor talks about the history of the ghost story in literature and how it can be used safely in classrooms to intrigue young minds and get them to be creative. As a writer, he visits hundreds of schools each year and tells ghost stories. These have led thousands of children into reading and writing. He will talk about the popularity of ghosts through the ages and reveal some of his own encounters as a Priest. The session explores ways of using the myths and legends of all our localities to help children understand the value of reading, history, geography as well as matters of faith. Q&A included.

12.00-12.45

2.15 - 3.00 Building a Culture of Reading by Promoting Students’ Right to Read Rowena Simmons, Academies Enterprise Trust In this informative and inspiring session, Rowena will detail the considerable success one Academy has achieved in becoming a "reading school", and explain how this inspired a Trust and Academy-wide training programme for teachers: The Right to Read.
2.15 - 3.00 A Holistic Approach to Raising Achievement Using Accelerated Maths

Janet Collins,

The Crest Boys' Academy

Janet explains how using Accelerated Maths not only raises overall standards of numeracy, but also helps promote the skills that are central to effective learning. She demonstrates how students learn to organise their work in folders and become more methodical in their approach as the term progresses. As a result, they are immediately focused when they enter the classroom; keen to continue their work and enjoy taking responsibility for 'marking' their own work with the hand-held responders. This immediate feedback is a great motivator, and Janet explains how a number of her own students have become so engaged with the program that they even stay behind during break to finish their work.
