Targets and Certifications FAQs

QuestionAnswer

Why are the targets not showing on the AR diagnostic report?

They need to view the diagnostic report by the marking period for which the targets are set, not the whole school year.

Why are targets not appearing on TOPS reports?

They need to be set by marking period of terms not the whole school year.

What do I set for a book level target?

This is up to a teacher’s judgement. The ZPD has a low and high range and we would recommend setting a target within this scale. If you feel a pupil has a reading ability above their prescribed ZPD you can set them a target at the high end of their ZPD range or vice-versa.

How do I set points targets?

Use the target setting chart as a guidance, or teacher judgement. The chart can be found on the left hand side of the Target Setting pages under the heading actions.

Can I reduce % correct target as pupils are finding 85% too high?

No, this cannot be changed, based on our extensive research an 85% average represents good quality of reading for growth.

Can I set targets for teams?

Yes; create teams in the team section of Class Record Books and pupils individual targets will accumulate together for a team target.

Can I set targets/certificates for the whole class rather than one pupil at a time?

Unfortunately, no. The certification process is designed to be considered carefully for each pupil individually.

Can the certificates be automatically moved on to the next criteria level?

No, they can’t – again this is probably to promote teacher judgement and decision on a case-by-case basis, but it is something we have asked the States to do in the future software upgrade.

How do I print certificates?

AR – Reports – Reading Practice – Reader Certification Certificates.

How do I print certificates for particular pupils/How do I print particular certificates/How do I stop it from printing all the certificates?

Teachers will need to customise the dates when they view certificates otherwise the report will display everything for the whole school for the whole school year. They should use the drop down menu to choose the marking period or type in the dates since they last printed. They can also customise it by selecting 'pupil' and ticking the relevant names or by the class in the drop down menu.

They cannot choose to print by the certification levels unfortunately e.g. choose to just print all the ‘Ready Reader’ certificates. We have asked the States to consider this in the software upgrade.

What are the criteria for the certificates?

See the Reader Certification Criteria document.

Where do I find the target setting chart/ reader certification criteria?

It is in the class record books target or certification page on the left menu, or you can access it via AR resources – Forms and Charts.

How do I know which certification level to move them to next?

Look in Class Record Books to see if the pupil has achieved a certificate, and the action box will provide options regarding which level is next.

What does Ready Reader ‘2’. Star Reader ‘4’ etc mean?

There is always the option to re-certify for certificates (except for Independent Reader) if you feel the pupil isn’t yet ready to move onto the next level.

Why does it say ‘approve’ on Independent Reader certificates?

This is there for teachers to verify that the pupil has read those books independently. As soon as you click on approve you can then move on with the other levels as usual. If this is not selected an error will occur forcing you to any new certificates returning to Independent Reader and approving it.

Where do I find the ‘Honours Reader’ certificate?

The teacher creates their own Honours Reader certificate based on their own criteria to reward the top pupils.
