In 2007, literacy levels at Unity City Academy were very low. Initial STAR Reading baseline assessment revealed that an average of 80% of the pupils were at least one year below their chronological reading age. Since the introduction of Accelerated Reader four years ago, the reading age of pupils has increased in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10, whilst KS4 attainment levels have also consistently improved.

Since introducing the program at the school two years ago, results in reading have risen dramatically. 100% of Year 6 children achieved at least Level 4 in reading comprehension over the last two academic years, with a significant percentage - over 50% - achieving Level 5. The program has increased motivation, and the quizzes have helped to build comprehension skills and encourage the children to reflect on what they have read.
