"We have all witnessed the genuine joy with which the students are now reading."
Accelerated Reader™ (AR™) a software from Renaissance Learning™ was introduced to the school over five years ago to encourage the development of a ‘Reading Culture’ at a time when many students lacked interest in reading and saw it as a chore rather than a pleasure. The goal was to raise attainment in literacy and encourage Reading for Pleasure by providing more access to, and interest in, books.

"It's fantastic to see pupils really progressing with their reading "
We have found that having Accelerated Reader in place allows us to devote more time to pupils who are struggling with their reading, whilst allowing the more able readers to take greater responsibility for their own reading progress. Pupils seem to really enjoy reaching targets and challenging themselves to harder and longer books..

The Accelerated Reader program overall has been a resounding success
It now makes the pupils' reading more meaningful and focused, and of course it gives the teachers excellent diagnostic information and other data that can be used to give pupils support and guidance. It has certainly encouraged the reading of the majority of boys and those reluctant readers can more easily be identified and supported.

"If last year was exciting, then this term has really converted us to AR disciples!"
Last year, a 10 year old, who had struggled with his reading for many years, suddenly started to have a keen interest in reading. His reading age rose by 1.5 years and he won our reading prize at the end of the year. Such a fantastic result encouraged us to sign up for another year!

"Results show steady upward climb in ability!"
When the school's Librarian, Kirsten Bax, joined the staff in 2000, one of her first briefs was to follow-up on material that had been received about Accelerated Reader - which she duly did and proposed introducing a pilot following successful lobbying for additional funding. The pilot went so well that the program was rolled out across the whole first year intake, taking in around 70 children.
