How does it work?

NEO 2 helps:

A. Inform and direct one-to-one teaching with SEN pupils
B. Engage and enthuse SEN pupils to write with confidence
C. Achieve success across the curriculum at the same rate as other pupil

-

A: INFORM

NEO 2 is ideal for facilitating one-to-one tuition, in addition to helping groups of SEN pupils develop their writing skills. As authors, journalists and academics agree, the best way to become a better writer is to write, and the personalised writing practice offered by NEO 2 does just that.

At its most basic, NEO 2 can be connected to a class computer via a USB cable to become a secondary keyboard that allows both teacher and pupil to type simultaneously on screen. When used with optional Co:Writer software, pupils automatically receive grammar-smart word prediction that enables them to write fast, quality text resulting in more complete, grammatically correct sentences.

-

B: ENGAGE

Around 5% of British schoolchildren experience motor difficulties in the form of dyspraxia, or developmental co-ordination disorder, even though there may be no evidence of neurological, biochemical or physical abnormalities. Increasing numbers of pupils are also diagnosed with dyslexia, and many of them have difficulty writing.

NEO 2 helps engage and enthuse SEN pupils thanks to built-in features, such as Sticky Keys and Auto-Repeat, and additional support from accessories, such as Text2Speech. Utilising the built-in Infra-red transceiver, Text2Speech allows writers to hear what they have written, letter by letter, word by word, sentence by sentence, or paragraph by paragraph – through headphones or speakers – and words are highlighted on-screen as they are read aloud.

-

C: ACHIEVE

Many SEN pupils achieve success with NEO 2 simply because it allows them to express themselves clearly when and wherever they are working. However, many more benefit from the special features designed to support specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, motor-skill impairments, low vision and autism.

More importantly, the personalised writing practice offered to SEN pupils allows them to gain confidence and keep pace with their peers.
