Leading author GP Taylor cites AR as best scheme to turn children into readers
By Ruth Atkinson
GP Taylor is the best-selling author of Shadowmancer, Wormwood and Tersias. Writing in the Yorkshire Post, he describes his reluctance to read as a child until a teacher gave him a gripping book and expected him to read it for himself. He goes on identify a North/South divide in time given to reading in schools, saying it is an “almost spiritual experience” to see hundreds of students reading at the same time.
There are many reading schemes that turn children into readers. In my opinion the best is Accelerated Reading.
In my travels I can spot an AR school as I walk in through the door. Their motto of “every child has a book and every child is a reader” really works.
