Teach with insight with learning progressions

Assessments tell you what students know. Core Progress™ learning progressions for reading and maths tell you what students are ready to learn next.

Learning progressions are excellent, logical and what we use on a daily basis!

Andrew Otty

Teaching is about understanding the needs of each student and then addressing those needs in the right order, so that students can progress. The pathway a student follows to master a complex and interdependent web of skills is called a learning progression.

When teachers know what students are ready to learn next—and what prerequisite skills they need to strengthen—they can individualise instruction like never before.

Built for the new national curriculum. Core Progress learning progressions have been built for and aligned to the new national curriculum in collaboration with the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER). They have been empirically validated using dynamic calibration and response data from thousands of students, ordering skill items and cross-linking them into a true mapping of skills that build on each other and serve as prerequisites to one another.

Map backward and move forward. STAR is the ideal intervention tool, identifying the students who need additional support and the skills they need support with. By highlighting missing prerequisite skills, STAR gives you the information you need to map backward to teach foundational skills in order to move forward on the learning progression.

Continue stretching high-achievers. Instructional planning with STAR Assessments helps teachers to identify the next skills a student ought to learn along a continuum within each skill domain. This ensures that students do not spend excessive time on skills they have already mastered. Students are easily grouped within STAR in order to differentiate teaching and learning appropriately.
