“The overall impact of Accelerated Reader and Star Reading on our school has been strong and positive.”

I think that passing the Accelerated Reader (AR) quizzes is a goal for many of our readers and may encourage some to read more. One of the best AR elements is being able to colour-code the books in the library so that students can choose books at a suitable level for them. Using the Star Reading test once a term is a helpful tool to monitor progress: to congratulate those who are progressing and allow for early interventions for those who have showed regression. The data’s support allows for meaningful discussions with parents about how they can encourage and support their children’s reading.

Star Reading (SR) tests are undertaken once a term to monitor progress. Students are encouraged to read for 30 minutes every day and take the AR quizzes once they have completed their books. Students can do this at home or during library periods. My KS3 students are given 10 minutes to undertake silent personal reading at the beginning of the English lessons. I monitor the books they are reading by jotting down the titles and the page numbers. This method ensures students cannot cheat the system by asking friends to log on to AR and complete tests on their behalf. I allow students to read books that are not on the AR system as I do not want to limit them. In the past, when my workload allowed, I would set individual points targets for my students and display progress to the class. Points targets are a good way for mixed ability students to be on an equal footing.

Since the AR and SR implementation, I have modified the amount of personal reading time allocated to lessons. I have also re-introduced reading time to KS4 students after seeing a dramatic decline in their reading abilities after a term of no reading time, along with no emphasis on AR quizzes.
