Empowering Maths Learning at Yeo Valley Primary School
Yeo Valley Primary School, Barnstaple
We spoke to Abigail Fleming, KS2 Deputy Phase Lead, who has been using Star Maths since she joined Yeo Valley Primary School as a NQT in 2018. When she joined, the school had recently started using Star Maths and, in 2021, it decided to also adopt Freckle as the products are closely aligned.
“Engagement with maths concepts has improved amongst all students as Freckle’s ‘Adaptive Maths’ function means that children complete activities that are individually differentiated for them.”
Improved Learning Outcomes
Abigail says, “Star Maths has helped us to improve learning outcomes as every teacher is able to track the improvement of each student within their class across an academic year. Teachers are able to understand which concepts have been mastered and which might need further consolidation and revision.”
She continues, “Freckle has been a brilliant tool that links with each child’s Star Maths results. Engagement with maths concepts has improved amongst all students as Freckle’s ‘Adaptive Maths’ function means that children complete activities that are individually differentiated for them. They love the gamified approach of Freckle and really enjoy earning coins. This makes learning fun and has improved their attitude towards maths.”
“Since implementing Freckle I have also noticed a difference in the students’ abilities to solve increasingly difficult maths problems.”
Addresses specific challenges
Every child at Yeo Valley Primary completes a Star Maths test at the start of each half term. The results of the assessment are then used to track progress and identify areas of improvement. For example, one specific challenge at the school has been that some children are missing key early maths concepts such as number bonds which hinders their progress. Star Maths helps to identify such issues so that teachers can work on individual targets with each child.
Abigail uses the extensive resources on Freckle to provide targeted support. She says, “I have taught children who are not working at the expected level for their year group and Freckle has a great resource bank of specific activities which can be assigned to them to support their learning journey. As every student is working on their own pathway, student confidence is improved as the children are not aware of the concepts their peers are working on. Since implementing Freckle I have also noticed a difference in the students’ abilities to solve increasingly difficult maths problems. Using the programme has helped them to develop a more resilient attitude and they enjoy working to improve their scores and results.”
“When assigning a task such as fractions, I will search for the term and will be given options from all year groups. This helps me to support the lower ability children and to challenge those who have already mastered the year group concepts.”
Alleviates workload and supports professional development
Abigail believes that Freckle has also decreased her workload. She says, “The Adaptive Maths function is a great way for the children to practise key concepts at the correct step for them. The best thing about this is that every task is assigned automatically and the children do not need to wait for an assignment in order to move onto the next activity. With Freckle, the tools are there and ready to use whenever they are needed. Planning for problem solving lessons becomes more effective as there are resources and activities that just need to be assigned!”
Abigail also says that the platform has improved her own professional development as she now has a better knowledge of the maths curriculum across other year groups – not just her own. She says, “When assigning a task such as fractions, I will search for the term and will be given options from all year groups. This helps me to support the lower ability children and to challenge those who have already mastered the year group concepts. Using the Renaissance resources has helped to support my development from a newly qualified teacher and enabled me to feel more confident to support the needs of all the students in my classroom.”
Insights and Data Utilisation
Abigail has found the data and insights tool on Freckle very helpful, particularly when writing her end of year reports. For example, she uses the skills report to discuss the concepts that each child has mastered and to provide next steps for them.
Abigail concludes, “I would definitely recommend Star Maths and Freckle to other schools as they are tools which every teacher can quickly learn to use and implement in their classrooms. They provide insightful information about the progress of every child and allow teachers to differentiate lessons and activities depending on the individual needs of their students.”
