The story

“Accelerated Reader and Star Reading have had a massive impact.”

We have been using Accelerated Reader (AR) and Star Reading for over 8 years to increase library loans and motivate students to read. We now use AR as our main monitoring mechanism for KS2 reading. Teachers monitor their classes every week, and class points are displayed in the library. The Star reading data enables children to make sensible book choices.

All the usage statistics show increased reading engagement levels by our students in terms of the number of quizzes passed, increased ZPD year on year, and increased average percentage correct. Star Reading helps us identify students who need extra support, which can be planned into guided reading sessions. We have just started looking at using the instructional planning report to help develop more meaningful guided reading sessions that are evidence-based.

“Star Reading helps us identify students who need extra support.”

Accelerated Reader and Star Reading have had a massive impact. AR has allowed our school to create a school culture that promotes and develops reading for pleasure. Our children have weekly library sessions and access to thousands of books on AR. It is the most reliable and accurate program to track and monitor independent reading practice. Our teachers use the data to support the children in the class make the most progress they can. The report data is also used at parent conferences and year group data team meetings.
