Kylemore College has been using Accelerated Reader and Star Reading since 2010 to promote reading for pleasure and develop reading engagement for all pupils. In 2020, Kylemore College invested in myON, the digital library by Renaissance, to widen access to reading for all pupils throughout an uncertain period of hybrid learning.

We got in touch with the school’s librarian, Joseph, after discovering that Kylemore College has completed the most Accelerated Reader quizzes for a secondary school in Ireland during the 21/22 academic year. Joseph explained why Renaissance solutions have been useful in supporting the school’s commitment to increasing reading engagement for all pupils.

Despite the significant impact COVID restrictions have had on us, we in Kylemore have continued to focus on our literacy targets. With Accelerated Reader and Star Reading data, we can assess different metrics in reading proficiency, including statistics for books read, book quizzes completed, and overall words read. Sadly, there’s no denying that these metrics are down compared to our reading data pre-COVID.

However, we’ve remained committed to driving reading engagement for all pupils even throughout these challenging times. I wanted to outline some of the strategies that have helped us…

The purchase of myON

myON has been useful during lockdowns, students working from home, and remote learning settings. In addition, the fact that each book has an accompanying audio feature that reads aloud the text to students has helped engage students who are reluctant readers.

Along with myON is that we also have access to a digital library called Sora, supplied to all JCSP schools by the JCSP. Both solutions have proven very useful during the lockdowns to allow students access to books, e-books, audiobooks and read-along books.

Teacher-made Accelerated Reader quizzes

Teacher-made Accelerated Reader quizzes have allowed us to extend the reading of many of our students who enjoy graphic novels and manga, which we can construct our unique quizzes on. More than ever, reading for pleasure has been our promotional drive, and letting students read wherever their interest lies have been a significant factor in maintaining student engagement.

Whether in their own subject or for supervision (of which there has been a great deal more during COVID), every teacher knows that students must have a library book in their bag. We are so fortunate to have a funded and staffed JCSP Library, allowing us to purchase an excellent book stock. In addition, our library provides a  welcoming and inviting reading space and engages with students and staff to promote reading for pleasure.
