More pupils than ever before reaching the higher standard of reading at The Learning for Life Partnership

All five schools at The Learning for Life Partnership use Accelerated Reader and Star Reading to support their respective reading development strategy.

In July 2022, following the success the trust had recently had with more pupils meeting the higher level expected standard in reading than ever before, we got in touch with Director of Education Jo, who explained the impact of Accelerated Reader and Star Reading having throughout the trust.

Jo explains:

“This reading initiative has impacted pupils’ outcomes, evident in our reading results, with more pupils meeting the higher standard in reading than ever before.”

In 2019 the trust decided to commit to a big push in boosting standards in reading across all schools. Part of this initiative meant investing in better quality and more varied texts for all schools. In addition, another part of this drive to boost reading engagement was introducing Accelerated Reader to all schools.

We’re seeing increased reading engagement thanks to AR’s incentives, such as completing quizzes and receiving certificates for hitting reading targets. But, as we advance, we want to transition this reading engagement into pure reading for pleasure so that all pupils can access texts without indication or inability.

In the next five years, we want to see all pupils and new cohorts making tangible progress in their reading proficiency so that by the end of Key-Stage 2, all pupils can access higher-quality texts. We know that if pupils have strong reading proficiency before they transition to secondary school, that will open more opportunities for attainment and success in their secondary school journey.

However, at this point, we know that as a trust, we’ve placed a significant focus on reading over the last few years, including implementing AR and Star Reading. This reading initiative has impacted pupils’ outcomes, evident in our reading results, with more pupils meeting the higher standard in reading than ever before.
