A Simple Programme that makes Reading Accessible for All
Outwood Junior Academy Brumby, North Lincolnshire
Outwood Junior Academy Brumby has been using Accelerated Reader and Star Reading since 2018 to support their reading development strategy.
In December 2021, we had the pleasure of informing the school of the good news that Outwood Junior Academy Brumby pupils had carried out the MOST Accelerated Reader quizzes in North Lincolnshire! The academy completed over 16,283 quizzes between August 2020 to November 2021.
Following this incredible achievement, we spoke to the academy’s Reading Coordinator and Reader Leader, Jessica, to explore Accelerated Reader’s role in the school’s reading strategy.
“Most importantly, reports from Star Assessments are individualised to the child and support class teachers.”
Using Accelerated Reader, we have seen a considerable improvement in our pupils’ achievement and attitude towards reading. The clarity it offers for both pupils and their families to track their reading development is excellent. It provides a cycle of assessment to track their individual growth and compare national averages. Most importantly, reports from Star Assessments are individualised to the child and support class teachers in delivering bespoke and timely intervention to ensure success.
“The simplicity of the format ensures every child can access [book quizzes], both in school and at home.”
Our pupils enjoy the challenge of the book quizzes. The simplicity of the format ensures every child can access them, both in school and at home, which was invaluable during the lockdown period when children were accessing learning virtually.
“[Accelerated Reader] offers such a range of inspirational and challenging reads that appeal to everyone’s interests and abilities.”
As an academy, we hold competitions linked to AR data which has been highly motivational and successful in encouraging children to read frequently at home to contribute to their class word count and quiz rates. They love the half-termly class reward parties and ‘Reading worm’ awards given to individuals who achieve the highest word count across their year group. It offers such a range of inspirational and challenging reads that appeal to everyone’s interests and abilities.
